FAQ's

What is an airbag?

An airbag consists of a clear plastic bladder (typically polyethylene) that holds compressed air, and an outer shell made of extensible kraft paper or woven polypropylene material. In addition, some airbags consist of only one layer of material, for example poly-vinyl chloride (PVC) or polyethylene (PE).

When inflated and installed they reduce the risk of product damage by restricting load movement during transit. Shippers airbags can be used when shipping loads by truck, sea container, intermodal, railcar or ocean vessel.

Does the industry have any other names for airbags?

Other industry terms for airbags: dunnage airbags, disposable inflatable dunnage (D.I.D), reusable dunnage airbag, disposable dunnage bag, inflatable dunnage bag, or dunnage bags. el.

What is the function of an airbag?

When inflated and installed they reduce the risk of product damage by restricting load movement during transit. The airbags are positioned in gaps (voids) between the cargo and inflated with compressed air in a matter of seconds.
Their light weight makes the air bags easy to handle and fit into place, even into gaps (voids) that are hard to reach. In many cases only a few air bags are needed to secure and protect even the largest cargo loads.

Additionally, airbags reposition the load and create a bulkhead, further preventing load shifts.

How do I determine what airbag is right for my load?

The correct size and type of airbag is determined by a variety of factors such as the weight of the product, the void size and the transportation mode.

What are the key benefits of using an airbag?

What can be used void when exceeding?

Corrugated void fillers, cardboard panels or old pallets can be placed either against the side wall of the truck or the sea container, or in between the airbag and the load to be secured.

When can't I use airbags?

Airbags should not be used as a means of filling space at the doorway unless precautions are taken to ensure that they cannot cause the door to open violently when the locking bars are released.

To protect airbags from sharp edges, splinters or nails, use proper buffer material (cardboard, honeycomb) to protect airbags from puncturing.

Airbags should never be used with dangerous goods or inside airplanes.

Can I reuse a Shippers airbag?

Shippers airbags are manufactured as a disposable airbag that can be reused an average of 4 times (depending on the type of air bag used). Reusability depends on the application as well as the handling of the airbag. Before reusing an airbag you should always verify that it is free of any wear or tear. However for shipment by rail the AAR (Association of American Railroad) prohibits reusability.
